Marilyn Yates
Marilyn Yates is an artist who paints impressionistic views of nature in both watercolor and acrylics. She is a teacher and student of nature, learning new ways to express truth through painting. Her work has been described as poetic, lyrical and sensitive.
The recipient of a BFA from California State University at Los Angeles, Marilyn pursued post-graduate studies with many nationally recognized painters, including Edgar Whitney, Ted Goerschner and Irby Brown. She has been a public school teacher and has conducted numerous private art classes, workshops and commissions.
Marilyn’s award-winning works have been including in exhibitions nationwide and are part of multiple corporate collections, including Atlantic Richfield Corporation, Federal Reserve Bank, Dallas Federal Savings, Lone Star Gas and Pan American Bank. Her work has been recognized with signature status and a Best of Show award by the National Acrylic Painters Association.
Marilyn has been honored for her still-life work by International Artist Magazine and her landscapes have been awarded special recognition by the respected American Women Artists.
Though she is a native of Chicago, she now draws inspiration from the landscapes near her home in Santa Fe, N.M. “The area around northern New Mexico is an endless source of rich and varied images that inspire my work,” she says. Her artist’s statement also includes the following:
“What interest me most in choosing a subject, be it a landscape or still-life, is its intrinsic design. I look for pieces of line and shadow on which to build a composition. My aim is to interpret the scene before me rather than creating a photographic image. After I’ve developed an underlying design, I begin to pay attention to shapes, colors and edges. A variety of brushstrokes brings poetry to a piece. My palette is influenced by the color and light peculiar to the area. The color of the adobe soil seems to permeate the atmosphere and add unity to the landscape.”
She adds that she has recently begun to visit and paint the beautiful mountain country of Colorado and Wyoming.
